Structured Tutoring
Published in Hardcover by Educational Technology Publications (June, 1980)
Author: Grant Von Harrison
Average review score:

Structured Tutoring
I have used this system on numerous students over the years. It is wonderful for English speaking adults who have a large sightword vocabulary. It helped severly learning disabled students when most other systems failed to help. Easy to use for all. Best for one-on-one. Does not address comprehension, but is great for decoding.

Successful Grants Program Management
Published in Paperback by Jossey-Bass (December, 1999)
Author: David G. Bauer
Average review score:

A Great Learning Tool for Grant Seeking
As a companion for David Bauer's excellent video series on writing winning grants or as a stand-alone resource, "Successful Grants Program Management" is a must-have for the non-profit grant seeker. I borrowed this book through our state university's inter-library loan program, and I have had it out for over two months. I figured the fines are adding up so quickly, I may as well purchase it for our grant committee.

Symmetric Functions and Hall Polynomials
Published in Textbook Binding by Oxford University Press (July, 1993)
Author: Ian Grant MacDonald
Average review score:

*The* reference for this stuff, but it's poorly indexed
This is *the* reference for symmetric functions and related topics. The second edition is greatly expanded, including (among other things) valuable material on Macdonald polynomials (though the author modestly does not refer to them by this term). The exposition is clean and to the point, as we have come to expect of Macdonald. The only defect of the book is that it can be hard to find things in it. The index is much too short, and much of the material is presented in long lists of disconnected "examples" that are very hard to search through quickly.

Syrian Desert
Published in Hardcover by AMS Press (01 September, 2003)
Author: Christian Grant
Average review score:

An Exceptional Resource
I came across Grant's "The Syrian Desert" while researching a novel. I was after good hard information about camel caravans crossing from the Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf in the early seventeenth century. I found everything and more in this wonderful book.

Anyone who's fascinated with the desert and what it must have been like -- and is still like, in many respects -- to live there will get a lot out of this book. Grant brings the reader step by step through the daily routine of a camel caravan: from careful calculations of how far they might travel in a day to the logistics of paying off local Bedouin tribesmen (often you'd be given a "rafeek," who acted as a human passport); from how to bake 'Arab bread' to a transcription of a contract between a bashi, or caravan leader, and a European traveler seeking passage to Bashra; from a day-by-day description of the Great Desert Route to the purported reasons why riverain Arabs were to be avoided at all costs.

The amount of useful information I gathered from this book is staggering; I have yet to go through it all.

Reading certain sections, I could practically feel the sun beating on my brow, taste the sweat on my lips, smell the sun-backed sand under my boots, and hear the complaints of the plodding camels. Truly a wonderful resource.

Team Ministry: Putting Together a Team That Makes Churches Grow
Published in Paperback by City Bible Publishing (June, 1989)
Authors: Dick Iverson and Ray Grant
Average review score:

Greatly helpful book for war-torn and weary church leaders
I am a pastor and have a couple thousand books of my own. Of those I have a couple dozen I wish I could see get into the hands of every Born-again Christian Church Leader. This is one of those books. On this subject, the only book I've read that I like better is Watchman Nee's very hard to find book: The Normal Christian CHURCH Life. This book differs from that one in that Nee's small book deals just with the Theology of Team ministry whereas this one covers a lot of the practical application of those Biblical principles as well. These principles could be church-life changing for many a weary and struggling pastor. Can't afford a 2nd/3rd staff member? Can you afford not to hire one? Take a cut in pay if you have to, until the extra man draws in enough new membership to defray his cost. But DON'T ruin your health, your marriage and family life, and your ministry trying to be a little bit of all the ministries God never called you to, while NOT exercising the precious gifts God did give the Body of Christ through you. Get the book, you won't regret it.
